Welcome to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) which is how the Government and Early years professionals describe the time between birth and 5 years. Mrs Kane is leading the team and is happy to answer any questions that you may have.
We work closely with the children’s previous settings to ensure the children settle in as quickly as possible. At Queen’s Drive Infants School every child matters, we work hard to get to know individuals and build positive relationships so that the children feel safe and happy in our stimulating learning environments.
Once the children feel happy and safe we make the most of their natural curiosity and love of learning through topics based on well-loved core stories.(See below the topic plan for 2016-17)
We change our topics regularly to match the children’s interests – please look at the topic board in the lending library to see what we are learning about.
We follow the daily READ WRITE INC programme for teaching children Reading and Phonics and use phonically decodable reading books from Oxford Reading Tree and Bug Club.Parents are encouraged to change their childs book when needed.
Click on the link below to find out about READ WRITE INC and how you can support your child/children at home. Also see the attached frequently asked questions document.
During this important phase the children learn both inside and outside of the classroom.
Areas of learning include
Communication and language
Personal, social and emotional development
|Understanding the world|
|Expressive art and design|
The teachers plan carefully to meet individual and groups needs ensuring that all children make good or better progress.
We work closely with parents to help all children achieve their potential.Parents help on trips and are regularly invited to our Story Cafe. Please ask your class teacher/Mrs Kane if you have any questions they will be happy to help.

Language Challenge - For each new topic we produce a language challenge sheet with suggestions of topics to discuss and talk about this will help and encourage the children to use new topic vocabulary and also help you find out about what they have been learning. We also send home a vocabulary sheet at the beginning of the new topics so that children can be introduced to new vocabulary in English and any home language.
Maths - There are maths challenge cards in our lending library, please take one and return when completed.
Phonics/RWI - During the Autumn/Spring term the children will bring home a phonics book to practice the sounds they have been taught, after this the RWI red words will be sent home for children to learn to read and write.
