‘THE WRITE STUFF’

In year 1 we are continuing our writing journey using the ‘The Write Stuff’ with Jane Considine.

This half term the children will be using the texts Little red Reading Hood to explore fiction and Grace Darling  through BBC Film to learn how to write a biography

We will also be having a poetry week in line with National Poetry day.

Handwriting 

We will be continuing our journey into developing outstanding handwriting. 

Can your child form their letters correctly?

If you would like to practice ask your class teacher for some handwriting lines.

We teach the handwriting in letter groups.

The straight family -i,l,t,j

The coathanger family - c, o, a, d, q, e

The bridge family - n, m, r, h, b, k, p

The zig zag family - v, w

The smile family - u, y

The misfits - s, f, x, z

SCIENCE

The children will be exploring the unit 'Animals including Humans where they will be learning the importance of exercise, eating healthy and hygiene.

The children will be using fitness watches to monitor and track their steps and exercise.  They will beale to use data collected by the whole class.

HISTORY

What was life like for a Vicyorian child? The children will think about events beyond their own living memory. They will take a Step back in time to a Victorian school on our trip to Ramsey Rural Museum.

They will also explore famous people from Victorian life like Grace Darling and Queen Victoria.

 

Art

The children will be deepening their understanding of sketching/painting in order to explore portraits. They will be looking at portraits from  our past Kings and Queens concentrating on detail and pattern. They will also have chance to find out more about Pablo Picasso and the techniques he used to create art.

MATHS

  • ·Number facts  to 20. recalling all facts speedily.
  • Place value (2 digit numbers)
  • Addition and subtraction of a 2 digit number and 10's
  • ·Counting in 2,5,10
  • ·2-D and 3-D  Shape properties
  •  fractions of a shape

Help at home telling the time. O’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, Recognising coins and making amounts.

 

E-Safety

It is still a high priority of ours to teach the children how to safely access the internet.

Home Learning

Your child will bring home a home learning bingo board next week in a book.

Over this half term you choose an activity a week to complete with your child in the book.

At the end of the half term bring the home learning book back to school for the teacher to see.

If your child completes the home work they could be chosen for a home work prize!!

Swimming

This term we are delighted to be offering swimming lessons to all our Year 2 pupils. We see this as a vital life skill. Children will swim weekly for a series of lessons at Stanground pool. We see huge progress during these lessons and by the end, the majority of children can either swim unaided or with a float and all have gained water confidence.

Please look out for your letter to see when your child will be going.

 

Helping your child with

reading

Your child’s reading book will be changed every Monday. They will also bring a  lending library book home too. 

Remember to read every day with your child. This could be you reading to them or them reading to you.

Reading Challenge

At the end of the week if your child has read at least 3 times they will get a reading sticker.  If they keep this up over the half-term they will get a reading prize. Please remember to write in your child's reading record when they have read.

  • Sports/Active Week of the 25th September - wear PE kit every day
  • Victorian School trip (date to be confirmed)
  • National Poetry Day - 5th October. The children will be entering a poetry competition thinking about the environment so look out for some of their poems on our website.
  • Year 2 story cafe. A chance to come into school to work alongside your child on reading activities based around a story.
