‘THE WRITE STUFF’

In year 2 we are continuing our writing journey using the ‘The Write Stuff’ with Jane Considine.

They will be creating a Non chronological Report based around the unit 'The Seasons' The children will write their own Seasonal report.    

We will also be reading 'Jack and the beanstalk' The children will be composing their own adaptations to the story.

Handwriting 

Handwriting is still developing. The children are continuing their daily lessons is letter formation and we are seeing a real impact.

SCIENCE

Plants

What plants can grow in our local area?

The children will be exploring our school grounds and garden to name and identify common plants.

They will look closely in order to name the structure of a plant using key vocabulary like:

tree, plant, trunk, bark, root, stem, leaf, petal, stamens, pollen, fruit, flower, seed

They will compare the difference between plants from leaf shape, size, petal colour and shape.

If we're lucky the children will manage to grow a bean and bring it home. 

With the help of our vegetable garden and the kitchen we will see how we can grow foods to eat. We will be using our compost bins to explore ECO.

 

At home help your child to look at plants and trees growing in your local area.

Geography

 

Do all places have the same man-made and natural features?

The children will be revisting the map of the UK, the 4 countries, their capital cities & the surrounding seas. They will recap the key landmarks and basic physical and natural features of the UK.

They will begin to look and Compare FEATURES where we live in Peterborough to other areas in the UK.

Please bring in photos of places you have visited. 

They will using maps, photographs, IT, video clips to explore different features of the UK from beaches, the countryside to mountain ranges.

British Isles ''Cation 2017: Heading Across The Seas

WOW DAY!

We were lucky to have Chef Darren from 'Roots to Food' join us for the day. All the children had a fabulous time chopping, slicing, stirring in order to create a delicious 'red pesto chicken pasta'. I can safely say there were clean plates all round!

Computing

This half term the children will be using the programs they have being taught on purple mash within their topic work activities. 

They will also become more familiar with the keyboard, logging on and logging off ready for year 2.

ART

Can we only make art on paper?

The children will discovering other ways in which art can be created, through food and clay.

They will also be using a range of drawing materials to develop their sketching of lines and shape when drawing food.

The children will be looking at the work of Paul Cezanne and his still life drawing of fruit. They will also be creating a clay relief using line drawings of fruit.

MATHS

  • ·Number facts to 10. recalling all facts speedily.
  • Understanding tens and ones in a number
  • Addition and subtraction subtracting ones from a number using apparatus. 
  • Counting in x2, x5 ,x10, x3 and showing this through pictures.
  • Recognising the coins
  •  fractions of a shape and fractions of numbers. (1/2, 1/4)
  • Doubles and halves.

Help at home telling the time. O’clock, half past

 Recognising coins and making amounts in different ways.

 

E-Safety

It is still a high priority of ours to teach the children how to safely access the internet.

Please keep a look out at home what your child is accessing online.

The children will also continue to build on their understanding of e-safety and the importance this has when using the Internet and technology.

If you would like any information about E-safety please ask your class teacher and Mrs Talbot can help you.

Look out for the home learning which will be completed in your child's Home Learning Journal.

Helping your child with

reading

Your child's reading books are now changed on a MONDAY.

Remember to read every day with your child. This could be you reading to them or them reading to you.

Don't forget the importance of reading to your child. Bedtime story time is a wonderful time to share reading.

Reading Challenge

We have had more children receiving book prizes for reading 3 reads at home each week. Remember to keep a note in your child's reading record.

At the end of the week if your child has read at least 3 times they will get a reading sticker.  If they keep this up over the half-term, they will also get a reading prize. Please remember to write in your child's reading record when they have read.

Bedtime Story Event

Everyone had an amazing time at the bedtime story event. The children listened to 4 amazing stories read by staff at the school. 

PHONICS SCREENING CHECK

The week of the 10th June the children will complete their phonics screening check. Thank you for all your support with learning sounds and word reading. You will get to know if they have passed when you receive your child's school report later in the term.

 

 

SPORTS DAY

Join us for SPORTS DAY for KS1 at TDA field on Tuesday 9th July

Children will be taking part in 6 different activity stations in their classes. You are welcome to join us - just pop over from 9:15am and find your child's class.
