                                    The Great Fire of London

‘THE WRITE STUFF’

In year 2 we are continuing our writing journey using the ‘The Write Stuff’ with Jane Considine.

They will be creating a Non Fiction and Diary writing based around The great Fire of London using the book by Emma Adams called The Great Fire of London. The children will write their own Diary entries.

The second unit will build on story telling through the text by Christopher Wormell, George and the Dragon.

WOW DAY!

On Monday 13th Jan the children experienced a WOW day for Horrible Histories and explored paintings and artefacts from the past to put together events which occurred in 1666. Check out this website to learn about the fire.

Handwriting 

Wow! The children have been working so hard on their handwriting. They have been nipping in the bud any formation errors and thinking about size. Some children have started to learn to join their letters together. 

SCIENCE

Materials

The children will Identify and compare the suitability of a variety of everyday materials, including wood, metal, plastic, glass, brick, rock, paper and cardboard for particular uses.

They will find out how the shapes of solid objects made from some materials can be changed by squashing, bending, twisting and stretching

History

What was life like in the 1660’s?

How was life different in 1660 from now? (Tudors)

Why was the Great Fire of London so devastating?
The children will think about events beyond Living Memory -The Gunpowder Plot/ Great fire of London /The Plague. Then explore how some of these events are linked together.

They will investigate the lives of significant individuals and their national contribution – like Samuel Pepyse who was famous for writing his diaries about teh Great Fire of London.

Computing

The children will continue to explore how we can use technology through the curriculum. eg. maths games, espresso, purple mash, bbc bitesize, phonics play.

 

 

 

 

You will find your child's username for purple mash in their reading Record. They will be able to show you at home what skills they are working on.

MATHS

  • ·Number facts  to 20. recalling all facts speedily.
  • Place value- How we can split a 2 digit number into tens and one. (10 + 12= 22, 20+12= 32, 30+2=32)
  • Addition and subtraction of a 2-digit numbers beginning to brdige the ten.
  • multiplication and division using x2, x5 ,x10, x3
  • ·money- coin recognition and making amounts in different ways. eg 52p = 20p+20p+10p+2p  or 10p+10p+10p+10p+10p+2p=52p)
  •  fractions of a shape and fractions of numbers. (1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/4, 3/4)

Help at home telling the time. O’clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to, Recognising coins and making amounts.

E-Safety

It is still a high priority of ours to teach the children how to safely access the internet.

Please keep a look out at home what your child is accessing online.

The children will also continue to build on their understanding of e-safety and the importance this has when using the Internet and technology.

Home Learning

Home learning tasks will be given out in their Yellow home learning Journal. Please make sure to bring this back if you haven't already so the new tasks can be stuck in.

Choose  1 a week from the bingo board of tasks.

Helping your child with

reading

Your child’s reading book will be changed every Friday. They will also bring a  lending library book home too. 

Remember to read every day with your child. This could be you reading to them or them reading to you.

Don't forget the importance of reading to your child. Bedtime story time is a wonderful time to share reading.

Reading Challenge

We have had more children receiving book prizes for reading 3 reads at home each week. Remember to keep a note in your child's reading record.

At the end of the week if your child has read at least 3 times they will get a reading sticker.  If they keep this up over the half-term, they will also get a reading prize. Please remember to write in your child's reading record when they have read.
