Phonics Screening Check
The Phonics Screening Check is a short, statutory assessment that takes place in Year 1. It checks how well children can use their phonics skills to read words by sounding them out and blending the sounds together. During the check, children read a mix of real words and made up (nonsense) words in a one to one session with a teacher. The purpose of the check is to identify whether children are meeting the expected standard in phonics and to highlight anyone who may need extra support. Children who do not meet the standard will be given further help and will retake the check in Year 2.
