Transition

As children reach the end of Year 2 at Queen’s Drive Infant School, they could be offered a place at Thomas Deacon Junior Academy for their KS2 education if you have completed the Junior School application form. This MUST be completed before the January deadline if you want your child to be considered for a place by the LA.

We understand that moving to a new school can feel exciting but also a little daunting, so we work closely with families and local junior schools to ensure the transition is as smooth and positive as possible.

How we support transition

To help children feel confident and well‑prepared, we support transition in several ways:

  • Information sharing: We share important information with receiving junior schools so that staff are aware of children’s learning, strengths and any additional needs before they start.

  • Visits and familiarisation: Where possible, children have opportunities to visit their new school, explore the building and meet staff.

  • Staff communication: Infant and junior school staff work together to discuss curriculum continuity, support needs and wellbeing, particularly for children with SEND or additional needs.

  • Transition activities: Children may complete transition activities or receive information from their new school to help them understand what to expect in Year 3.

Supporting children with additional needs

We recognise that some children may need extra help with transition. For children with SEND, we work closely with parents, carers and junior schools to ensure appropriate planning and support are in place. This may include additional visits, careful information sharing, or personalised transition arrangements.

How parents and carers can help

Parents and carers can support transition by:

  • Talking positively about the move to junior school

  • Attending open days or transition meetings where possible

  • Sharing any concerns with school staff so we can work together to support your child

Our aim is for every child to feel safe, confident and ready for learning as they move into the next stage of their education.

Do feel free to ask Mrs Talbot any questions you may have about this as she will be working very closely with the Academy teachers.
