Year 2

Mrs Talbot is our Year 2 leader and will be happy to answer any questions you may have.

We are following the Primary National curriculum in Year 2 – please see the Long term topic plan below. Year 2 pupils focus on basic skills to develop reading skills, phonics for spelling and blending words, accuracy and extended sentences in their writing. We now use the READ WRITE INC programme to teach Reading and Writing. Our main Reading scheme for home reading is the Oxford Reading Tree and we follow the Penpals handwriting scheme. In Maths, we focus on the operations in of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These skills are taught daily with targets to develop next steps. (See the Literacy and Maths pages for more details).

The curriculum is based on topics that children will enjoy where skills can then be applied in a cross curricular way. Children are encouraged to develop creativity and imagination and share a range of experiences both in and out of the classroom. There is learning across all the NC subjects and RE. In Science the children cover specific areas outlined in the curriculum, they are; animals including humans, materials, seasonal change and plants. We incorporate investigations and first hand experiences to ensure that the children develop a love and understanding of the subject.  Computing skills are taught and then applied through independent learning and topic based application. All Year 2 children are being trained in e-safety.

Children in Year 2 are supported in any areas of difficulty by our experienced support staff and we target resources such as Pupil Premium or SEN funding carefully to meet individual needs.

Supporting your child

Please encourage your child to read each day and learn and spellings that are sent home. Regular homework is really helpful for your child to practise skills taught in school.
